   Tbh. of ಹಿಂಗು (Śmd. 357). a tall perennial plant, growing in Persia, and yielding the drug Asafoetida, Ferula asafoetida; the drug prepared from the plant (ಹಿಂಗು, ಬಾಹ್ಲಿಕ, ರಾಮಠ etc. Nr.; ಹಿಂಗು, ರಾಮಠ Mr. 138; ರಾಮಠ Śm. 83; Si. 311). ಇಂಗಿನ ಎಲೆ (ಕಾರವಿ, ಬಾಷ್ಪಿಕೆ Nr.; see Si. 311). ಇಂಗು ಮೆಣಸು ಜೀರಿಗೆ three well-known condiments which one day somebody was ordered to buy, when he had a piece of paper given him on which the above three words were written; he went to the bazaar and first bought ಇಂಗು then, by misreading, ಮೇಣ (wax), after that ಸೂಜಿ (a needle), and finally asked also for ರಿಗೆ (that is meaningless). hence the words are used to denote 1, confused reading; 2, a simpleton (C.). [Prvs. ಇಂಗು ತಿನ್ದ ಮಂಗನ ಹಾಗೆ. -ಸಮುದ್ರಕ್ಕೆ ಇಂಗು ಕದಡಿದ ಹಾಗೆ ]. ಇಂಗು ಹಚ್ಚು to deceive, in the phrase: ಅವನ ಕುಣ್ಡಿಗೆ ಇಂಗು ಹಚ್ಚಿದಿಯೋ (C.).
