   the forty-sixth letter of the alphabet (Śmd. 12, 21). it is the final of several nouns and verbs (58). about its use in euphony see Śmd. 64. 65. 67. 68. 69; and about its being doubled, 84. 86. 87; it takes the place of ಗ್ in ಪೋಯ್ತು, ಆಯ್ತು (Śmd. 289); for other changes observe e. g. ಮದನ = ಮಯಣ, ಮದವನ = ಮಯ್ದುನ; ಯಕ್ಷ = ಜಕ್ಕ, ಯಜ್ಞ = ಜನ್ನ, ಯಮ = ಜವ, ಯಮಲ = ಜವಳ; ವೇಧ = ಯಜ್ಞ; ಯಜಮಾನ = ಎಜಮಾನ, ಯಜ್ಞ = ಎಜ್ಞ, ಯತಿ = ಎತಿ, ಯಮ = ಎಮ; ಯೋಗ್ಯ = ವೋಗ್ಯ; ಅರ್ಕ = ಯಕ್ಕ, ಯಮಲ್ = ಅಮಳ್; ಯುಗ = ನೌಗ; ಯವಸ = ತವಸ, ದವಸ; ವಿಂಗಡಿಸು = ಯಿಂಗಡಿಸು; ವಿಭೂತಿ = ಯಿಬೂತಿ; ವ್ಯಸನ = ಯೈಸನ; in colloq. Kannaḍa initial ಎ is often represented by ಯ e. g. ಯಕ್ಕು = ಎಕ್ಕು, ಯಣ್ಣೈ = ಎಣ್ಣೈ, ಯಮ್ಮೈ = ಎಮ್ಮೈ an initial ಇ is often written and pronounced as ಯಿ e. g. ಯಿಕ್ಕು = ಇಕ್ಕು, ಯಿಲಿ = ಇಲಿ further ಏತ becomes ಯಾತ, ಏಲಕ್ಕಿ ಯಾಲಕ್ಕಿ, ಆಂಯಾನು, ಏ ಯಾ, ಆವ ಯಾವ. see also ಈ 4, ಏ 1 and ಏ 4; ಯುಗಾದಿ = ಉಗಾದಿ; ಹೋಯಿತು, etc.
