(the seizer): N. of a daitya or demon with four arms and a tail, who drank a portion of the amṛita produced by the gods from the churned ocean, for which reason Viṣṇu served his head and two of his arms from the rest of the body; the head and tail were transferred to the stellar sphere, the head wreaking its vengeance on the sun and moon by occasionally swallowing them for a time, while the tail, under the name of Kētu, gave birth to a numerous progeny of comets and fiery meteors: the dragon's head, the ascending node of the moon (ಸಿಂಹಕಾತನುಜ Mr. 39; ಗ್ರಹ ವಿನರ, ಗ್ರಹಭೇದ Nn. 76; ಬಾಂಗೈಸೈವ ಪಾವು Kk. 11b; ಬಾಮ್ಬಾವು 12; ಚಾಳ್, ಏಲರ್ವಟ್ಟೈವಾವು Śm. 17; see Mr. 59). 2, an eclipse, the moment of occultation or obscuration. 3, a startling event, any public calamity, as an eclipse, a meteor, an earthquake, etc. (ಉತ್ಪಾತ 76). 4, a formidable poison (ಕರಾಲ, ಮಹಾವಿಷ 76). 5, fire (ಅನಲ, ಅಗ್ನಿ 76.)
