   the fifty-sixth letter of the alphabet; at present it is obsolete, and usually represented by ಳ್; the many Kannaḍa words in which it ought to occur, are enumerated in Śmd. 32-37; it arises from ಟ್ (30), ಠ್ (30), ಡ್ (28. 140. 217. 222. 275), ತ್ (30), ರ್ (30), and the so-called kṣaḷa (30); when it began to fall into disuse, its substitute became ರ್ () see Śmd. 50, and e. g. ಅರ್ತಿ, ಅರ್ದು, ಆರ್ದು 1, ಎರ್ದು, ಬಿರ್ದು 2; in course of time the ರ್ was converted into the letter it preceded, e. g. ಅರ್ದು became ಅದ್ದು, ಎರ್ದು ಎದ್ದು, ಬಿರ್ದು ಬಿದ್ದು, (ಎರ್ವಿಸು ಎಬ್ಬಿಸು) cf. ಎೞ್ತು = ಎತ್ತು; ಎೞ್ಚಱ್ = ಎಚ್ಚಱ್. see also s. ಸ್.
