   = ಅನು 5, ಅನ್ನು 1, ಅಮ್, ಎನ್ 1, ಎನು 2, ಎನ್ನು 1, ಅಮ್ 3. to say; to speak; (to tell); to call, to name (C.; Tu.; Te. ಅನು). relative present participle ಅಮ್ಬ (generally ಎಮ್ಬ); P. ps. ಅನ್ದು, ಅನ್ತ, ಅನ್ತಾ, having said, (for which often ಎನ್ದು etc. are used; see ಎನ್). third person singular imperfect ಅನ್ದಿತು or ಅನ್ತು the verb ಅನ್ like ಎನ್ is used to introduce words and sentences, being added to their end, for which purpose it stands there either alone, or its P. p. is followed by any other term connected with "speaking", also by itself, e. g. ಬನ್ದರು ಅನ್ದನು, he said that they came, or ಬನ್ದರು ಅನ್ತ, ಹೇ/?/ದನು, or ಬನ್ದರು ಅನ್ತ, ಅನ್ದನು, ಹೋಗು! ಅನ್ತ, ಅವನನ್ನು ಕಳುಹಿಸಿದನು, he dismissed him saying "go!" ಎಲ್ಲಿಗೆ ಹೋಗಲಿ? ಅನ್ತ, ಕೇಳಿದನು, he asked "where shall I go?" ನಾನು ಆ ಊರಿಗೆ ಹೋಗಿ ಬರುತ್ತೇನೆ ಅನ್ತ, ಹೋದನು he went away, saying he would go to that village and come back. ಅಪ್ಪನ ಅಪ್ಪಾ ಅನ್ನದವ ಚಿಕ್ಕಪ್ಪನ ಅಪ್ಪಾ ಅನ್ದಾನೆ? (Prv.). ಹೀಗೆ ನನಗೆ ಅನ್ದನು (My.). ಬಾ! ಅನ್ದು, ಅವನಿಗೆ ಅನ್ದನು (My.). -ಅನ್ತಾ. (Prv.). ಅನ್ದರೆ if one says, if you say. ಸನ್ದಿ ಅನ್ದರೆ ಏನು? if you say "sandhi", what is it? i. e. what is sandhi? ಅವು ಆಣೇಕಲ್ಲು (says one boy), ಅನ್ದರೇನು, ಅಪ್ಪಾ (asks the other, B. 1, 22). 2, if you say, it is. ಭ್ರಾನ್ತಿ ಅನ್ದರೆ ಒನ್ದನ್ನು ಮನ್ತೊನ್ದನ್ನು ಆಗಿ ತಿಳಿದು ನಮ್ಬುವಿಕೆ (Si. 48). 3, that is to say. ಸಂವಿದ್, ಅಗುರ್, ಪ್ರತಿಜ್ಞಾನ, etc. ಈ ಹತ್ತು ಅಂಗೀಕಾರದ ಹೆಸರು, ಅನ್ದರೆ ನನಿಗೆ ಇರಲಿ ಎನ್ದು ಒಪ್ಪುವಿಕೆ (48). 4, ಅನ್ದರೆ is further used to replace, so to say, the simple ಅರೆ if, e. g. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಕತ್ತಲಾಯಿತು ಅನ್ದರೆ ನನಗೆ ಈ ಗುಡ್ಡದೊಳಗೆ ದಾರಿ ಸಿಗಲಿಕ್ಕಿಲ್ಲ (B. 3, 123). ಅದನ್ನು ನಾವಿಬ್ಬರು ಸರಿಯಾಗಿ ಹಂಚಿ ಕೊಣ್ಡು ಬಡುವಾ! ಅನ್ದರೆ ಜನ್ಮದ ದರಿದ್ರ ವಿಚ್ಚಿನ್ನಮ್ ಆಗುವದು (4, 51). ವೈದ್ಯರೇ, ದಯ ಮಾಡಿ ನನ್ನ ಸಹೋದರರನ್ನು ಹೊ/?/ಗೆ ಕಳುಹಿಸಿರಿ! ಅನ್ದರೆ ನಾನು ತಮಗೆ ಎಲ್ಲಾ ಬಿಚ್ಚಿ ಹೇ/?/ತ್ತೇನೆ (4, 76). see also B. 4, 113. 114. 152. — verb ಅನ್ is also put before a sentence to introduce it, e. g. ರಾಮನೆಮ್ಬ ಹುಡುಗನು ಅನ್ತಾನೆ- ಅಜ್ಜಾ, ಭೂತ ರಾಕ್ಷಸರ ಕಥೆಯನ್ನು ಹೇ/?/! (B. 5, 127). ತುಳಸಿಯೆಮ್ಬ ಹುಡುಗಿಯು ಅನ್ತಾಳೆ- ಅಜ್ಜಾ, ಇಸಾಪ ನೀತಿಯೊಳಗಿನ ಕಥೆಗಳನ್ಥ ಕಥೆಗಳನ್ನೇ ನನಗೆ ಹೇ/?/! (5, 127).
