   the fortieth letter of the alphabet (Śmd. 12. 21. 24). it occurs as the final of many Kannaḍa words, e. g. ಪೌನ್, ಬೈನ್, ಏನ್, ಬಾನ್, etc. (59) where when meeting a vowel, it is conditionally doubled (84, 214). 2, it is often substituted for the bindu, e. g. ಮರನಿರ್ದುದು, ಮರನೇ (115), ಪೌಲನರಿಯದ (127), ಅವನೌಳ್ಳಿದಂ (129), ಕಲ್ಲನೇರಿದಂ (144), ಅನ್ನನಿನ್ನನುನ್ನಂ, etc. (191). ಪದನೈರಡುಂ (197), ಬಹುಳದಿನಿಕಾರಂ (220), ವೈಯಾಕರಣರಿನೌನ್ದು (221); — -ಬಲವನ್ದು (24), ಕೈನ್ದಳಿರ್ (193), etc. 3, if it is preceded by ಣ್ it becomes ಣ್, e. g. ಕಣ್ಣೈಳಲ್, ಕಣ್ಣೇರ್, ಕಣ್ಣೋಟ, ಪುಣ್ಣಾಳಿ, ಕಣ್ಣೌನ್ದಪುದು, ಜಾಣ್ಣೈರೈದುದು (190). 4, it arises out of ರ್ in ತನ್ದು, ಬನ್ದು (280), ಒನ್ದು, (221), ತನ್ನಿಂ, ಬನ್ನಿಂ (281), etc. 5, it arises from ಲ್ in ಕೌನ್ದು, ಸನ್ದು, ನಿನ್ದು (280. 281); in ಒನಕೈ = ಒಲಕೈ, etc. ನಂಗಲ್ = ಲಂಗರ್. 6, it is a mere prefix, e. g. in ನಾನ್ = ಆನ್, j. 7, it is an auxiliary in ನ 2.
