   = -ಅಲು 1. place, direction, e. g. in ಅತ್ತಲ್ (ಅತ್ತ-ಅಲ್, ಎತ್ತಲ್ (ಎತ್ತ-ಅಲ್), ಪಡುವಲ್ (ಪಡುವ-ಅಲ್ Śmd. 145), ಹಿತ್ತಲ್ (cf. -ಅಲಿ 2, ಅಲ್ಲಿ;-ಇಲ್ 2, ಇಲ್ಲಿ). 2, state, condition, or action (in verbal nouns), e. g. ಉಣಲ್, ತಿನಲ್‌, ಕೊಳಲ್, ಮೆಲಲ್; ಉಯ್ಯಲ್, ನೆಯ್ಯಲ್, ಬತ್ತಲ್, ಸುತ್ತಲ್; ಆರಯಲ್ or ಅರಯ್ಯಲ್ (Śmd. 85. 86); ಕರೆ ಅಲ್ or ಕರೆಯಲ್ (73). in nouns, besides the nominative, it expresses the accusative or the locative (147, cf. ಅಲು 2); or, in verbs (verbal nouns), the meaning of the dative, e. g. ಎನಲ್ ತಕ್ಕಂ, ತಿನಲ್ ಕೊಣ್ಡಂ, ಉಣಲ್ ಬನ್ದಂ, ಕೊಲಲ್ ಬಗೆದಂ (86), ಕಳಲ್ ಪೋದಂ (87; see also 73. 277). its dative is ಅಲ್ಕೆ (see it separately), e. g. ನುಡಿಯಲ್ಕೆ ಬನ್ದಂ; ಪೇ/?/ಲ್ಕೆ ಕೇಳ್ದಂ; ಬಿತ್ತರಿಸಲ್ಕೆವೇ/?/ ಸುವರ್ಣೋತ್ಕರಮಂ ! (278); ತೆಂಕ ನಾಡ ಮ/?/ಯಲ್ಕೆ ಎನ್ದುಂ ಮನಂ ಬರ್ಕುಮೆ? (164). [Pb. 4, 31]. 3, at the time that, when, whilst. if -ಅಲ್ is used in this sense, the subject should be the same for the whole sentence (in opposition to the use of -ಅಲೊಡಂ, -ಎ 6, etc. which require a new subject for the second part of the sentence); it is therefore unclassical to say e. g. ಪಾದಪದ್ಮಂಗಳನ್ ಒತ್ತುತ್ತಿರಲ್, ಶೂದ್ರಕನೃೌರಿ ಸುಖಾಸೀನನ್ ಆಗಿರ್ದನ್ ಆಗಲ್;-ಬಯ್ಗಿನ ಕೆಮ್ಬಿಸಿಲ್ (i. e. ಬಿಸಿಲನ್) ಎಳಸಲ್, ಎಸೆದುವು ಆಶ್ರಮತರುಗಳ್ (Śmd. 296. 297). see -ಅಲೊಡಂ, -ಅಲೊಡನೆ,- — the verbal noun with final -ಅಲ್ followed by ಪಡು or ಪಡೆ forms a so-called passive, e. g. ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರವ್ಯವಹಾರಜ್ಞಾನಾರ್ಥಮ್ ಆಗಿ ಪೇ/?/ಲ್ ಪಡೆಗುಂ ಧೀರರನ್ ಅಕ್ಷರ ಸಂಜ್ಞಾಕಾರಂ (Śmd. 9); ಪೇ/?/ಲ್ ಪಡೆಗುಂ (61. 156); ಅವನಿಂ ಮಾಡಲ್ ಪಟ್ಟುದು (154; see also 157; 299 seq.).
